Electrical faults can escalate quickly when installations are not carried out correctly. In this case, we attended an urgent callout where a high-load immersion heater had been dangerously installed via a standard plug top and socket outlet, an unsuitable setup for the appliance’s electrical demand.
The excessive current draw had caused severe overheating, resulting in scorching, cracking, nuisance tripping, and complete failure of the socket and plug arrangement. We promptly identified the unsafe installation, isolated the hazard, and replaced the socket for a dedicated 20A double pole isolator, ensuring the system was restored safely and in full compliance with current regulations.

Outdoor electrical systems are constantly exposed to environmental risks and in this case, a damaged external junction box had been penetrated, likely by pests or accidental external damage, leaving the enclosure compromised and filled with debris. Moisture contamination had affected the internal cabling, resulting in failed insulation resistance readings and rendering the circuit unsafe.
Following thorough fault diagnosis, cleaning, testing, and reconnection of the affected conductors, the enclosure was replaced, returning the garden lighting installation to safe and reliable operation. Prompt identification and rectification of external electrical faults is essential in maintaining both safety and long-term system performance.
During this emergency callout, a dangerously overloaded immersion heater circuit was found to have been incorrectly supplied via a standard 13A switched fused spur, an unsuitable arrangement for the appliance’s electrical load. Prolonged overloading had caused severe overheating, leading to melted terminals, damaged cabling, and deterioration of the accessory itself, potentially creating a significant fire and electrical hazard.
Following full inspection, all compromised terminations were safely remade, damaged sections addressed, and the circuit was correctly upgraded with a dedicated 20A double pole isolator to ensure safe operation and full compliance with current electrical standards.
